What is translation

Translation is the process of transforming written content from one language to another while maintaining the original meaning, style, and context. Its main purpose is to accurately convey the written information in a different language.

Translation vs Localization

The main purpose of translation is to transform text from the source language to the target language so that the readers of the target language can understand what was communicated in the source text.

Localization may involve translation if done from one language to another, but may also be done within the same language of different regions such as from British English to American English.

The main purpose of localization is to adapt cultural content so that the text seems like it was intended for the speakers of the target region. Examples for localizing text to readers located in the US include converting measurements, e.g., meters to feet, converting currency, e.g., British pound to the US dollar, adapting cultural references, e.g., swapping out a reference to SKY, which are elite universities in South Korea, to Ivy League schools, which are elite universities in the US, and adapting common expressions, e.g., using the word “wow” instead of “crikey.”

Translation vs Transcription

Transcription is a process that prepares for the translation of audio content. To transcribe, the linguist will first listen to the audio and then write or type out what is being said word-for-word to prepare the source text. Once this step is complete, the linguist will translate the transcribed text into the target language.

How does translation work

All new translation projects at Valdes Language Services require an initial consultation. It is always free. Inquiry form and contact details here.

During this consultation, we will exchange information so that we have a clear and mutual understanding of the scope and requirements. Examples include the source files, language pair, turnaround time, subject matter, and the intended audience for the translated text.

Once this information is gathered, we will provide you with a quote. If we come to an agreement, we will start the translation and payment process.

We will request all of the files that need to be translated as well as any other reference files such as glossaries or style guides if available.

We will then assign the project to the best linguist that matches your requirements. They will look at the original text and translate it into the target language. They may need to do quick research during the process, for example by referencing a dictionary or news articles. Sometimes, when an exact translation for a word or expression doesn’t exist, they have to be extra creative! Once they are finished, they will proofread and run a spelling and grammar check.

We then double check the translated files and deliver them to you.

What translation resources are needed

The most important resource is the original text that needs to be translated.

Our preferred formats are Word documents or Excel spreadsheets. PDFs and images are fine, but may incur an extra fee for extracting the text to a Word document. Transcription is an add-on service. We would need audio files to prepare the source text.

If you have web links or the full copy of the published media of the original text for reference, glossaries, branding style guides, or other special instructions, please send those over too.

How much does translation cost

The rates for translation depend on a lot of factors, which is why we require a prior consultation for providing a quote.

Some factors include the language pair, turnaround time, and subject matter.

Depending on these factors, the translation rate is typically $0.25-0.35 per word.

If you would like an additional linguist to proofread the translator’s work, the proofreading rate is typically $60-90 an hour.

We also provide machine translation post-editing (MTPE) services. The MTPE rate depends on the quality of the translation and is typically $80-110 an hour.

Transcription service is provided at $70-90 an hour.

Localization service from one region to another (for example, Spanish from Spain to Spanish from Mexico) is $60-80 an hour.

All services include one free revision if needed.

Rush projects and poor quality of source files (illegible or inaudible) may incur an extra fee.

Rates published on this website are for reference only and may change at any time. Discounts may also be available for ongoing projects, non-profits, and more. Please send us an inquiry to get an accurate quote.

How to hire a translator

To ensure the highest quality of translations, the translator should be a native speaker of the target language (and specific region if required).

They must also have a strong understanding of the source language as it pertains to the subject matter if it is specific, for example, technical, medical, or legal documents. For formal documents, strong grammatical skills and understanding of formal writing is important as well.

For subject matter that is more cultural, such as with media content, the translator should have a strong connection with the culture of the region for the intended audience.

Finally, medical, legal, or official government documents may require special certification or sworn translators.

Valdes Language Services is an expert language services provider that will do all the heavy lifting for you. We will hire the best translator for your document and provide you with competitive rates.
